How can you stay safe while riding a motorcycle in the heat?

While using your motorcycle on the open roads, you may worry about the danger of driving long distances in the summer months.

There are ways to keep yourself and others safe during trips, including wearing safety clothing and making sure to keep your eyes on the road.

Use proper gear

Even when the sun is shining down on you, you still must make sure to take precautions and wear protective gear. According to WFMY News 2, covering your arms and legs in heavy material is one way to prevent injuries. Your pants should be tight around your lower legs to prevent accidentally them from getting caught in parts hanging off the bike.

Always keep your gloves and helmet on. Making sure your helmet is properly fitted to your head and your gloves do not slip while gripping the handlebars prevents human error while driving.

Double-check the road

While traveling with other cars and even motorhomes rushing to get to their next destination, it is even more important to pay close attention to the signs and stoplights. If you are traveling out of your home state for a vacation, make sure to note the local traffic laws.

Go with the flow of traffic and do not dart in front of other vehicles, even if you think you can make the turn safely. Keeping a proper following distance can help prevent crashes.

Keep yourself alert

Always make sure to stop driving if you feel ill or overheated. Taking time to cool down is imperative in the warmer days of summer. Do not take any illicit substances, which can easily slow down your reaction time while driving. Your reaction time is one of your strongest ways to drive defensively, so take care to look around before pulling out or passing another vehicle.
