How does inattentional blindness impact bicyclist safety?

Washington residents like you enjoy being able to bike. Washington has some of the best safety for cyclists. But this does not mean that there is no danger. Any time you share the road with motorized vehicles, you face a risk.

Distracted driving is one of the biggest risks you may deal with. And in that umbrella, there is a unique type of distraction. This is inattentional blindness.

Understanding inattentional blindness

The American Psychological Association discusses the phenomenon known as inattentional blindness. First, they point out that this is a normal human phenomenon. In everyday life, it helps individuals focus on one thing at a time. If you could not do this, you would absorb too many details at once. This makes functioning next to impossible.

Unfortunately, a driver must focus on many things at once. Multitasking is crucial to driver safety. It is important to protect other drivers on the road, too. If you focus in on only one thing while driving, you cannot safely react to other dangers.

Inattentional blindness in all drivers

What is another risk that inattentional blindness poses? You cannot predict who will do it. Some studies say that newer drivers are more prone to this. They do not have the experience to multitask yet. Because of that, they are more prone to hyperfocusing. But inattentional blindness affects everyone, as it is a natural phenomenon. It strikes at any time without warning. You may not even notice that your attention has zeroed in on one thing.

Being aware of the risk inattentional blindness poses is one way to handle it. This way, you can better prepare in the future.
