How to continue learning after law school

Even the best lawyers need to continue learning after starting their practice. Continuing to learn and grow after completing law school is essential for the success of your firm. There are several ways for new and experienced lawyers alike to stay up-to-date on Washington legislature as well as perform additional research on practice topics.

Law libraries

Law libraries are a fantastic tool for lawyers who want to brush up on material that they haven’t practiced in a while or learn about new laws. There are several law libraries in Washington, including:

  • King County Law Library: With two locations in Issaquah and Kent, this library offers many resources for members of the bar, including computers, free wi-fi and a vast amount of research materials. If you become a member, you will gain access to certain library materials, document delivery and discounted classes.
  • UW Law Library: University of Wisconsin’s law library is also available for public use. This library has an extensive catalogue of legal information specifically for Washington state. If you are a lawyer in Washington, this tool could be very useful.
  • Issaquah University Law Library: If you are not a student or alumni of Issaquah University, you must purchase a day pass to access the library’s privileges. However, this library has a wealth of legal information that is beneficial to any looking to increase their knowledge.

Continuing Legal Education

It can be easy to fall into a situation where you are routinely doing the same types of cases, using the same information. However, gaining more knowledge on unique parts of your practice area can aid you in growing and creating a successful practice. Completing Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs can help you hone your skills and give you new insight that can help you do the best work for your clients.

Ongoing education plays a vital role in providing effective legal representation. By taking advantage of law libraries, research resources, and continuing legal education opportunities, attorneys can stay informed on evolving laws and best practices. This commitment to learning ultimately benefits clients by ensuring they receive knowledgeable, up-to-date legal guidance when it matters most.
