Promoting safe cycling for children

When children finally learn to ride their new bicycle, it gives them an immense sense of achievement and freedom. They can go on adventures with friends and even visit other family members.

Unfortunately, there’s a downside to all of this- the safety risks. As apparent, what can you do to improve the safety of your children when they cycle?

Provide the proper equipment

The law regarding bicycle helmets in Washington can vary from county to county, but there is no state-wide requirement for cyclists to wear protective headgear. However, many parents agree that helmets help to protect their children from severe head injuries. Before your child sets out on their trips, make sure you spend some time trying on protective equipment. It may cost you a little to get them started, but the financial cost is worth the improvements to their safety.

Go with them

Children, especially when they are younger, love to engage in activities with their parents. Why not head out on regular cycling trips with them? This way, you get to bond with your child as well as keep an eye on them. If something does go wrong, then you will have an immediate responder on the scene.

Teach them

Children don’t drive so they may not be fully aware of the potential danger that vehicles pose. As an adult, you have a better idea of this. Teach them some of the basics about road safety, and emphasize that they should never take any chances around vehicles.

Sadly, no matter how cautious you are, your children can still end up getting hurt. If they’ve been hurt by the negligent actions of other road users, make sure you assess your options in terms of pursuing legal compensation.
