Tips for driving on snowy roads

If you drive in the winter, there’s often no choice but to drive on snowy or icy roads. There’s only so much that road crews can do to remove this snow and ice after a storm, and you need to know how to drive properly.

Many accidents happen because people simply make mistakes, or they don’t adapt their driving to the winter conditions. If you still drive like it’s the summer, you are at higher risk.

Increase your following distance

First and foremost, increase the distance at which you follow the next car. The more space you have, the better. This makes it easier to stop in time and gives you time to adjust if you find yourself sliding.

Reduce your speed

Always consider the conditions when you drive. Just because the speed limit is 55 does not mean that you have to drive that fast. It’s often helpful to plan ahead so that you have a little more time to get wherever you’re going and you can slow down while you drive.

Keep your attention on the road

It’s always wise to avoid distractions like a cell phone, but this is even more true in the winter. You need to react immediately if you run into hazardous conditions, and distractions make that impossible. Make sure you’re always paying attention to the traffic around you and the conditions in front of your car.

What if someone else hits your car?

Driving safely can help you, but someone else can still make a mistake and hit your vehicle. If you’re c this winter, you may be able to seek compensation.
